Maryland is a mid-Atlantic state, one of the original 13 colonies, and the 7th to ratify the US Constitution. It is bordered to the north by Pennsylvania, to the east by Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by , and to the south and west by West Virginia. The nation's capital, , was created from land that was originally part of Maryland.

A large natural body of water, Chesapeake Bay, bisects the state leaving the relatively unpopulated eastern shore counties far removed and isolated from the rest of the state.

Maryland MapMaryland's economy is diverse. Not surprisingly, a wide variety of government services is based in the state. Commercial fishing is important as are manufacturing and agriculture. High technology and biotechnology have a strong presence, especially in the Baltimore to Washington DC corridor.

Maryland's climate varies depending on location. On the eastern shore, the region is classified as humid subtropical with hot, humid summers and cool winters moderated by the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. West of Chesapeake Bay and further inland, the climate is classified as humid continental with much colder winter temperatures. Precipitation is typically considerable year-round.

Several professional sports teams have stadiums located in the state including the Baltimore Orioles (MLB - AL), the Baltimore Ravens (NFL), and the Washington Redskins (NFL).
